Active Travel at Sorrisniva

This June we had a visit from Dan Wildey and his wife Alice from Active Traveller Magazine. With the aim of showcasing active adventures at Sorrisniva, Katelin and the Active Traveller couple explored the striking landscape and used Arctic Wilderness Lodge as their starting point for 4 days of truly authentic and active experiences.

Every outdoor lover knows that connecting with nature has healing powers. Norwegians have always embraced this in a very holistic way with friluftsliv, an approach of incorporating nature into everything. The deeper into the wilderness you go, the more restorative the connection.

In search of a self-indulgent kind of solitude, we headed for the banks of the Alta River deep in Arctic Norway. Sorrisniva is a year-round destination offering an insight into the Norwegian way of life.

Mountain biking to Alta Canyon over the Finnmark Plateau.

Our appetite for adventure was in no danger of going unsatisfied. We mountain biked into the tundra of the Finnmark plateau, crossing melt-water streams and some technical cross-country terrain. We took a traditional wooden riverboat into Alta Canyon - Northern Europe’s Largest Canyon and most exclusive salmon fishing location, favored by royal and aristocratic fishermen - none nobler than the sea eagles we shared our journey with. And we hiked to the incredible Orvossfossen waterfall, which tumbles in wide sheets down the side of the cliffs of the Finnmark Plateau.

The active adventures in nature are enhanced by quiet appreciation and the simple luxuries offered at the Arctic Wilderness Lodge. Alta’s slogan is “Next to Nothing. Close to Everything.” and a room overlooking the river under the midnight sun is evidence of how easily our needs can sometimes be met.

Cooking in the woods - at one of the well-stocked fire pits that abound in the Norwegian wilderness. A dip in an ice cold waterfall. Local, seasonal food turned into an 8-course culinary experience.  Self-indulgence doesn’t have to be a form of over-consumption: you won’t find a more nature-led, restorative way of identifying life’s essential needs than by living like a local.

Cooking pancakes over the bonfire at the gapahuk.

We wanted nature and wilderness, so we traveled north, to find an Arctic expression of the Scandinavian friluftsliv - outdoor life. We wanted to relax in nature, escape in nature, but more than that we wanted the restorative power of nature. Since 1885 the Wisloff family has lived at Sorrisniva on the banks of the legendary salmon-fishing river of Alta. The draw for successive generations of the most discerning fishermen has shown no sign of abating and has led to a steady - but organic - growth in offerings for the active traveler.

Naturally, riverboat trips were developed to increase access to the best fishing, and a world-renowned restaurant has been operating on the site for 30 years - it is named Lavvu after the traditional Sami communal tent, and the building is designed to invoke it. Since 2000 Sorrisniva has operated an ice hotel, but our most recent development aims to continue the same sense of privileged escapism all year round: the Arctic Wilderness Lodge.
