Step back in time and discover what farm life was like 100 years ago.
We walk from Sorrisniva Wilderness lodge along the majestic Alta River toward our traditional mountain
pasture farm (sæter).
In earlier times, the sæter played an important role in Norwegian farm life during the summer months,
helping families make the best use of natural resources in the outlying fields and forests. Animals grazed
freely in nature, while the farm workers and dairymaids lived at the sæter, caring for and milking the
animals each day. The milk was then transformed into butter and cheese using traditional methods.
Travelers and fishermen passing by were often welcomed into the warm cabin for good conversations and
homemade food.
Along the way, we take time to enjoy the beautiful scenery while sharing stories about historical farm life
in Northern Norway. We plan the walk so we may meet some of our grazing animals along the route, and
there may even be an opportunity to give them a small treat.
Upon arrival, we serve homemade sour cream porridge (rømmegrøt) with drinks.
We return at a relaxed pace, taking in the peaceful surroundings and the atmosphere of life in the old
days.
