The Wisløff brothers had an idea 23 years ago to create something completely unique. As the first in Norway and second in the world, the ice hotel was built at Sorrisniva. Since then, the ice hotel has been built every single year with a new theme. The building has developed from 6 overnight rooms to today containing 20 double rooms, 2 family rooms, 5 decorated suites, an ice chapel, an ice bar, and beautiful art of ice and snow. The construction technique has been developed by local workers, who have been involved in the construction every winter for 23 years now.
The ice hotel's area is 2,500 m2. It takes 250 tonnes of ice and 7,000 m3 of snow to build the ice hotel. The hotel is built up step by step over a period of 4-5 weeks, depending on how cold the temperature is from year to year. We get the ice from Sierravann, which is a little further up in the Alta Valley. We produce the snow from water from the Alta River which flows right outside.
This year's theme is Africa. Our artists are inspired by the nature, wildlife, and climate of this part of the world and the continent that makes up 20% of the earth's land area. The theme is also a tribute to our "veteran" artist Knut Saxe Kjeldsberg. He has been helping to decorate our ice hotel for 23 years and is an expert in arts and crafts. Knut often travels to Africa, to be able to experience the nature and wildlife that stand out from what we have here in the north. Knut is particularly skilled at designing ice, and has, among other things, created the ice sculptures of a lion, crocodile and warthog in this year's ice hotel.
The Igloo Hotel is open for visitations every day 12:00-20:00. Entrance tickets can be purchased in the Reception.
Accommodation reservations can be made here.
